What is terry cloth?
Terry cloth is a soft and comfortable fabric, usually made mostly or entirely of cotton. French terry is usually made from 100% cotton, but can also be made by blending cotton fibers with a small amount of spandex, lycra, rayon or polyester, and organic soy or cotton fibers. French terry fabric first came into use in the 80s and has since become so popular that it is likely that most Americans have at least one French terry garment in their closet without even knowing it. As mentioned above, French terry is a knitted fabric; similar to a jersey, another popular knitted fabric, this material has loops of yarn on one side of the fabric and soft yarns on the other. Commonly used in sweatpants and sweatshirts, terry cloth has softer yarn on the inside of the fabric where it touches the body and the smoother side of the fabric on the outside of the garment. The comfortable, soft, soft texture of terry cloth is perfect for loungewear basics like sweatpants and cozy sweatshirts. As a mid-weight fabric, French Terriers are heavier than the material used to make most t-shirts but lighter than those used to make sweatpants or jogging pants for cold weather. This fabric is versatile enough to keep you cool in warm weather or warm in cooler weather.
What is fleece fabric?
Wool fabric, commonly referred to as sweatshirt wool, is another popular material used to make loungewear and casual clothing such as sweatshirts and sweatpants. Just like french terry, when making wool, loops of yarn are formed on the back of the fabric, which becomes the inside of the garment. However, the main difference between the two fabrics comes in the manufacturing process. In making the wool material, loops of yarn are chopped and cut, creating the soft, furry feel many associates with sweatshirts and sweatpants. This makes the fabric warmer and less breathable than French terry. Some people confuse French terry with sweatshirt fleece, as both fabrics are commonly used to make sweatshirts and sweatpants or sweatpants.
Which fabric is more wicking?
French terry and fleece are very comfortable, but that doesn't mean you have to wear either for strenuous exercise. When comparing moisture-wicking capabilities, terry cloth has the advantage. Because of the way the fabric is made, leaving loops of yarn inside the fabric, French terry is considered to be somewhat moisture-wicking and breathable, especially when compared to wool. However, most people prefer french terry fabrics as part of their loungewear, as the material is not as suitable for sweat and workout intensity as other fabrics specifically designed for active wear, such as bamboo fabrics.
