Swiss Better Cotton Development Association, English: Better Cotton Initiative, referred to as BCI. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it is a non-profit international membership organization.
There are 4 representative offices in China, India, Pakistan, and London. At present, there are more than 1,000 member organizations in the world, mainly including cotton planting units, cotton textile enterprises, and retail brands.
BCI cooperates with a wide range of stakeholders to promote Better Cotton (BetterCotton) planting projects globally and promote the circulation of BCI cotton fabrics throughout the supply chain in accordance with the cotton production principles formulated by BCI.
The ultimate goal of BCI is to transform the way cotton is produced on a global scale through the development of the Better Cotton Project, making Better Cotton a mainstream commodity. By 2020, let Better Cotton account for 30% of the world's total cotton production.
What is Better Cotton?
1. Does Better Cotton mean that the quality of cotton is better?
no. The Better Cotton project focuses on improving the production methods of cotton farmers, the rational use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, the protection of the rights and interests of practitioners, the health protection and safety precautions of practitioners, and the protection of biodiversity in the production environment. The quality of physical cotton, such as micronaire value, fiber length, uniformity, etc. is the same as ordinary cotton.
2. In what way do cotton farmers benefit?
(1) Hire agricultural experts to popularize agricultural knowledge for cotton farmers and cultivate scientific and reasonable planting norms;
(2) Reduce the input of production cost and increase the input-output ratio of cotton farmers;
(3) Cultivate cotton farmers' correct labor values, enhance self-labor protection awareness, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of laborers
3. What is the difference between Better Cotton and organic cotton?
The planting and production standards of organic cotton are completely different from those of Better Cotton. Organic cotton requires land certification, and there is a transition period from conventional production to organic production, usually 3 years. No genetically modified seeds are allowed, any chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not allowed, and there is no requirement for the use of water resources.
The principle of Better Cotton production is to train farmers to form correct operating norms on how to use chemical fertilizers and pesticides rationally, reduce damage to crops and soil, effectively use water resources, enhance labor protection awareness of laborers, and safeguard legitimate rights and interests of laborers.
4. How is Better Cotton certified? Who will issue the Better Cotton certification?
Better Cotton is certified and issued by the Swiss Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), and no other organization is allowed to conduct certification.
5. Does Better Cotton need to pay to obtain the certificate?
no. Better Cotton does not require certification at any point in the supply chain. Therefore, there is no problem of obtaining certificates through payment.
